9 Must-Know Fitbit Hacks

If you have a Fitbit, do you know all of the magic it can perform?

Whether your Fitbit is new, or it’s become like a longtime workout buddy, there might be some functions that are still foreign to you.

If you’re not familiar with certain Fitbit hacks, then you’re not taking advantage of all these great functions.

And you might not be getting as much information about your workout as you could be.

Want to get the most out of your Fitbit?

Optimize Your Workout Data with Fitbit Hacks

The following Fitbit hacks are must-knows to getting the greatest benefits from your tracking device.

1. Wear It Right

The key to getting your Fitbit to track accurately is to know how to wear it. It might not be as simple as just slapping it on your wrist and calling it a day.

For example, your dominant hand might be swinging harder, lifting heavier and just generally doing more of the work. So be sure your device knows where it is on your body.

Go to the Settings menu in the smartphone app, choose which hand on which you plan to wear your Fitbit, then keep it there.

Also, you want it to be properly positioned on your wrist. To do this, measure a finger’s width from the wrist bone and strap it on there.

Be sure it’s not too tight. This can affect circulation and screw up your HRM results.

2. Go Small

Micro, that is.

Yeah, you’re probably used to the “Go big or go home” mantra when it comes to your daily workout. And studying those graphs that show you your heart rate, the number of steps taken and other valuable metrics, helps you to understand trends in your activity.

But there’s a lot to be said for zooming in on those metrics. Want to know exactly when your heart rate spiked during that workout? One of the great Fitbit hacks is to choose a stat from your dashboard and then select a specific day.

Tap the graph at the top of your screen to expand it. Then hold your finger down on the graph so you can see the specific time of day associated with each data point.

With this pinpointed information, you’ll be able to determine exactly when your heart spiked.

3. Up Your Health Data… and Your Fun

Once you’ve figured out all the great things your Fitbit’s own app can do, explore some third party apps. They can seriously boost your data visualization experience.

Whether you’re working with Android or iOS, there are various Fitbit extension apps that can do more than just show you your stats. They can allow you to play games with other Fitbit users to boost those stats and discover new ways to get active.

4. Set Your Stride Length

Fitbit trackers calculate distance by multiplying your stride length by the number of steps you take. But how does your Fitbit know your stride length?

It doesn’t. Not really. It actually estimates your stride using your height and gender. Or it will figure it out by evaluating any runs done using GPS.

Whatever the case, to get accurate stats, you need to be sure your Fitbit has your correct stride length. That’s why determining this length is one of the most important Fitbit hacks.

And it’s so simple.

Just go to a track or another area where you can mark off a set distance. Count your steps as you walk that distance. Just be sure it’s a distance that takes more than 20 steps for you to travel.

Then take the distance you traveled (in feet) and divide it by the number of steps you took. That’s your stride length.

If your Fitbit has a different estimate, update your settings. Go to the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the Account icon, then Advanced Settings, then Stride Length.

5. Get Cued

If you’re not running on a marked track, you might occasionally wonder how far you’ve gone. Or perhaps you’re curious about how many calories you’ve burned.

Your Fitbit can actually tell you. Just turn on the voice cues and get ready to feel some extra motivation.

Tap the stopwatch icon, Cues and then turn on Play During Exercise. You get to choose the cues you want. You can choose from:

  • Distance
  • Time
  • Average Pace
  • Split Pace
  • Calories Burned

You also get to decide how often you want to get them.

So, for example, if you wanted to know calories you burned for every two miles, you’d check off Calories Burned under Cues and that 2.0mi is chosen under Frequency.

6. Compete with Your Friends

If the voice cue isn’t quite enough motivation, you can compete with your friends to motivate one another. Even if they have different fitness tracking devices.

With different apps, you can now connect with your friends who are sporting wearables from companies such as Apple and Garmin.

That way, everyone can stay on their toes without a tech brand war breaking out.

7. Lengthen Battery Life

This is certainly the simplest of Fitbit hacks.

Want to be sure you’re getting the most out of your already efficient battery? Boost it by switching off All-Day Sync.

That way, it won’t waste any juice interacting with your smartphone all day. And you can update it manually when you choose to do so.

8. Get Credit for the Commute

Are the steps you’re taking to and from your car to the office or the bus stop getting tracked? What about if you’re riding your bike?

If you’ve got SmartTrack, you can adjust your settings so that you get credit for all of that movement.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to your exercise settings.
  2. Tap the exercise tile on your dashboard and then the gear icon at the top right.
  3. Find the exercises of your choice.
  4. Lower the default time setting so that your tracker will log that activity as an exercise if you do it for at least 10 minutes.

You might be surprised just how active you are!

9. Strut Your Stuff

You already know you can share your dashboard, right?

But one of the Fitbit hacks you might not be aware of is the ability to celebrate a great workout.

Just click on the specific workout tile and then select the share icon at the top of the screen. Choose a background, take a photo or grab one from your library.

Tap Share to upload the image to the Fitbit community or another social network of your choice. And now you’re a rockstar.

Get out There and Start Moving

Once you’ve incorporated all of these Fitbit hacks to get the most out of your device, you’ll have a better idea of just how much you’re getting from your workout.

If you want to personalize your Fitbit further, consider any of the special watchbands available for your device.

Are iPhone X Cases Really Necessary?

Are you protecting your expensive new smartphone the right way?

iPhone X cases are supposed to offer protection for your phone. However, not everyone agrees on whether or not these cases are really essential.

In this guide, we’ll break down the pros and cons of iPhone X cases so you can decide if one is really worth the investment. Let’s take a look at the real facts about the iPhone X case.

How Durable Is the iPhone X?

Before deciding whether or not you need a case, it’s helpful to take a look at how durable these phones are without a case.

The iPhone X is notoriously expensive, and you won’t want to leave such a valuable asset unprotected. However, you may be reluctant to spend the funds you have left on a case.

Apple’s sleek new phone design features a frame made of stainless steel, which feels sturdy. However, these phones also have a delicate glass back.

The glass back allows for wireless charging, which is great. However, this means that both the front and the back of the phone can be broken.

In short, the iPhone X is more prone to breaking than other phone models simply because of its design. Not only that, but also if you break or damage these phones, you’ll pay a lot more for repairs.

You might choose to pay extra for AppleCare+ up front, which will cover some fixes. However, if you don’t pay for this service, you can pay hundreds just for a screen replacement.

Replacing the glass back of the phone can cost up to twice as much as replacing the front screen.

Let’s take a closer look at just how likely it is that this damage is going to happen.

Surface Scratches

Most smartphone screens can be scratched – some more easily than others.

The double-sided glass of the iPhone X means there are more surfaces that can get scratched. However, the frame is less likely to be scratched than older models, since it’s made of stainless steel rather than aluminum.

Drop Tests

Drop tests show that the iPhone X can survive a drop from a height of about three feet. That’s approximately the height of someone’s pockets, or the height from which you’re most likely to drop your phone.

Even at five feet, at least one test found the phone survived intact, with no damage aside from scratches and marks. However, from a greater height, the screen will be sure to break. And there’s no guarantee that it won’t break or crack from a lower height if it falls the wrong way.

It seems that these phones are fairly resilient against damage from being dropped. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still protect your phone.

Water Resistance

The iPhone X is equipped to handle water submersion to a depth of about three feet.

Water tests confirm that these phones are quite resistant to water damage. This may come as a surprise to many smartphone users who have been taught to avoid water at all costs in the absence of a waterproof phone case.

Should People Buy iPhone X Cases?

The facts show that this phone is surprisingly durable. However, like all tech devices, it has its weak points, like the glass screens in front and back. So, should we all run out and buy iPhone X cases? Or is this a waste of money?

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of investing in a case for the most expensive phone to date.

iPhone X Case: Pros

There are many benefits to having an iPhone X case, depending on which one you buy.

The first and most obvious is protecting your phone. The iPhone X is designed to be durable. However, one of its weakest points – the glass screens – is one of the easiest to protect with a case.

Since these photos are water- and drop-resistant, you don’t even need to invest in a heavy-duty, waterproof case, which can be expensive and bulky. The most basic phone cases should still offer protection for the back of the phone. Many simple cases also have front screen protection.

Other types of cases offer other pluses. Some have built-in cardholders, so your phone can double as your wallet. This is perfect for the modern customer who appreciates a streamlined lifestyle.

Yet another benefit of a phone case is the aesthetic. Lots of people have an iPhone X. A case allows you to customize and personalize your phone. This is a fun way to show your sense of style. It also makes it easier to find your phone quickly when you need it.

From trendy leather cases to sleek silicone ones, you can find a functional case that suits your look at many different price points.

iPhone X Cases: Cons

What are the reasons not to invest in an iPhone X case?

For many people, the price is a concern. However, when you weigh the cost of a phone case against the cost of the phone itself, it’s a pretty small price to pay for protection.

Factor in the high cost of repairs and you have one more reason to shell out a little more for a case.

Some people have noticed other problems with phone cases, such as that the case makes the phone slippery and more likely to be dropped.

These cons apply only to certain styles of phone cases, though. If you’re concerned about your phone slipping, buy a leather or silicone phone case instead of a plastic one.

iPhone X Cases: The Final Verdict

It may be true that an iPhone X case isn’t really “necessary” for your phone. But the pros of getting one far outweigh the cons.

The cost of fixing even minor damage to your iPhone X can be steep. However, the price of a phone case isn’t much compared to the price of repairs (not to mention the price of the phone itself).

Think of a phone case as being like insurance for your phone. Most of the time, you won’t need it. But if and when something does happen to your phone, you’ll be glad you have it.

5 Things You Need to Know About iPhone 8 Cases

With each smartphone release, the debate rages on over whether users should put a case on it. Yet, it feels like the few who say you shouldn’t probably haven’t seen the new iPhone 8 cases.

Those against cases raise points such as cost, dirt, bulk, heat, and aesthetics. The other side believes these are all addressable issues. Most importantly, phone cases bring many benefits.

As such, phone case lovers pour over the web searching for various phone cases. Currently, iPhone 8 cases are drawing a lot of attention. Keep reading to learn more about them.

Features of iPhone 8 Cases

Like all other Apple phones, the specs on the iPhone 8 are at a high level. These phones have a great design, advanced user interface, and a quality display.

Such an amazing phone deserves quality iPhone 8 cases. So what do these cases have to offer? Here are the five things you need to know:

1. Your iPhone 7 Case Can Fit the iPhone 8

If you are averse to buying a new case before you’ve used your current one for long, then you are in luck. The iPhone 8 is about 0.2 millimeters taller and wider than the iPhone 7. This means you can fit your old case to the new model.

But what’s the point of having a new phone with an old case? That’s like putting old tires on your new car. Try the new cases. You won’t regret it!

Moreover, while the difference in millimeters might be small, they can have a big effect. For example, tighter cases for the iPhone 7 may not fit well with the new model. This can cause structural damage to your device. It might also reduce the effectiveness of protective cases.

The metallic iPhone 7 cases may also not fit. Their specifications are too close to adjust to the extra millimeters in the iPhone 8.

2. The Cases Are Customizable

Those who think phone cases will ruin an iPhone’s sleek look need not worry. The iPhone 8 cases are customizable. Thus, you can create a unique look that fits your preferences.

For example, some companies allow users to upload images to design their covers. This means you can upload your selfies or favorite pictures for use. You also choose the colors and the type of material you want.

Others opt for 3D printing their covers. This allows them to make quality cases that fit their personality. They could print cartoons, family pictures, movie stars, or their favorite sports teams.

If you’d rather avoid designing your own case, visit any store and you’ll find ready-made covers. Some have designs you would not have thought of before. This is an unexpected bonus.

3. There are Different Protective Cases Available

It’s not surprising that 79 percent of smartphone users have a protective phone case. For many, their history of dropping phones forces them to prevent potential damages. The sleekness of these devices makes it easier to slip out of our hands.

Sometimes, the problem is the environment you are in. As an example, construction workers may be the most at risk of dropping their phones. Parents also fall into this category. Kids may throw the phone or drop it when you least expect it.

The good news is there are iPhone 8 cases offering different levels of protection. If you are a careful person, you can go with a slim yet protective case. If you are in a tougher environment, you need a bulkier protective case with a screen protector.

Another thing to consider is how to keep your device safe from water. The iPhone 8 device can last in 1m of water for about 30 minutes. This doesn’t mean people should leave it underwater that long. With time, the water will damage the phone.

Waterproof cases can prevent this situation. Otherwise, you’ll have to fork out more money for repairs or a replacement. This applies to dust as well. Limit the iPhone 8’s exposure to dust and it will prevent internal damages.

4. You Can Use a Wireless Charger If You Have the Right Case

While some still believe wireless charging is a fad, others think it’s the future. The iPhone 8 has wireless charging capabilities.

You have to make sure the iPhone 8 cases you use are a few millimeters thick. Charging pads have a preferred case thickness of 3mm. The charger might work with a thicker case, though it makes it less effective.

This is useful if you don’t intend on removing the case every time you want to charge your phone. Tough to remove cases can turn the benefit of wireless charging into a painful chore.

If you have a case with credit card slots, they might prevent the phone from charging. These slots raise the phone and this adds distance between the device and the charging pad.

5. The Different Case Materials Offer Custom Solutions

As mentioned earlier, the iPhone 8 cases come in different materials. Those who are into style can opt for leather cases. These are useful as well when people choose wallet phone cases. It prevents having to carry a wallet and a bulky leather-covered phone.

The smooth interior in leather cases protects your screen from scratches. Leather also offers different designs and colors.

Other case materials include natural wood, plastic, silicone, and fabric. There are polycarbonate, carbon fiber, and metal cases as well.

Silicone cases can have a lot of color, patterns, and textures. Some criticisms include being tough to clean and lacking handling features.

Manufacturers use polycarbonate materials when making battery pack cases. The battery pack gives you extra battery life and recharges as you charge your phone. Such cases also provide wireless charging features, drop protection, and scratch-resistance.

Tips and Tricks Every Fitbit Alta HR User Should Know

Congratulations on your purchase of a Fitbit Alta HR!

You made a great selection, as it won the 2017 Wearable of the Year and Wareable’s fitness tracker of the year.

Or, maybe you haven’t quite pulled the trigger on that purchase yet. We’ve put together some information on the benefits of a Fitbit tracker, in case you’re still on the fence.

Whether you have a Fitbit or are contemplating buying one, it’s important to know how to make the most out of your device.

Check out the tips and tricks below to navigate through your new tech-improved lifestyle.

Is This Thing On?

The Fitbit Alta HR has the amazing feature of measuring your heart rate — if it’s worn correctly.

In order for it to accurately read your pulse, wear it on the arm you use the least. If you’re right-handed, wear it on your left wrist and vice versa. This is because general movement from your dominant arm can affect data.

Let your tracker know which arm is wearing the band. Set this by doing the following:

  • Go to your account
  • Hit “Alta HR”
  • Choose left or right arm for “handedness” and “wrist”

When wearing your Fitbit, it should sit about 1/2 an inch below the line of your wrist.

When working out, move the Fitbit about 1 1/2 inches up the forearm, toward your elbow. This way, it can pick up on increased blood flow which helps measure heart rate data.

Overall, the band should fit you comfortably. It should be tight enough so it’s not moving around a lot, but lose enough so that it’s not cutting off circulation.

Set Heart Rate to Auto

You can maximize the features of your Fitbit Alta HR by putting the heart rate setting on auto.

To do this, go to your account, select “Alta HR” and then choose “heart rate.”

The more consistently your heart rate is measured, the more precisely your Fitbit can monitor your lifestyle. Your burned calories, spikes in heart rate when exercising, and sleep patterns will be recorded more effectively.

Choose Your Display

Everyone wants to see something a little different when glancing at their Fitbit Alta HR.

For instance, many people like keeping the battery icon on the face of their tracker as you can see how much power you have throughout the day. A low battery image indicates about 24 hours of power left.

You can arrange your display icons from the Fitbit app by choosing “customize display” from the account settings. To arrange your stats, touch and hold the three grey lines of each icon and drag them in the order you like.

Know how to correctly charge your fitness band:

  • Plug the cord into a USB port on your computer
  • Attach the other end of the cord to your Fitbit
  • Be sure to align the pins with the three circles

You’ll know it’s charging when the Fitbit vibrates and the battery icon appears.

To check charging progress, tap the screen to see the battery level. When it’s 100% charged, the battery icon will be full.

Enable MobileTrack

We all leave electronics at home or at work — it’s inevitable! If you don’t want to go a day without your Fitbit stats, use the MobileTrack feature.

MobileTrack allows your phone to step in and do the monitoring until you can get to your Fitbit.

It’s not quite as precise as the Fitbit Altra HR, but it’s a great substitution to help you stay on track.

To set up MobileTrack:

  • Go to your account
  • Hit “set up a device”
  • Choose “MobileTrack”

Anytime you are without your tracker, MobileTrack will kick in by default to record your steps and other more general activity.

It will then disengage when you put on your fitness band.

Understanding Sleep Features

A staggering 68% of people feel that they don’t get enough sleep. And most people underestimate the value of rest.

If you are one of these people, you must take advantage of the fantastic features Fitbit Alta HR offers to improve your rest and measure it.

Sleep Reminders

Staying on a regular sleep schedule — going to bed around the same time every night and waking up at the same time each morning — is crucial for maintaining a good sleep schedule.

Your trackers can help you do that by letting you know that it’s time to get ready for bed.

It’s recommended to start winding down 30 minutes before bed, at least.

You can set this bedtime reminder by tapping the sleep icon and accessing sleep features from there.

You’ll get a notification on your phone and your tracker will buzz at the reminder time you set.

Be aware though, if you are relatively still around the time you set your reminder, your tracker will think you’re already sleeping and won’t send the notification as to not wake you.

Sleep Details

Your tracker also has the capability to tell you how much time you spent lightly sleeping, in deep sleep, or in REM sleep each night.

However, there are some cases in which your tracker can’t measure those things.

You might have slept in a way so that the Fitbit couldn’t measure your heart rate – maybe it was too lose or just you were in an odd position.

You chose the “Begin Sleep Now” feature in the app. This won’t measure your sleep patterns. For the detailed breakdown, you have to sleep with the device around your wrist

You may not have slept long enough or the battery is too low for the device to operate.

If any of those situations occur, you’ll receive a more simplified list of sleep details. Like the total number of hours you slept and the time that you went to bed and woke up.

Be sure to sleep with a fully charged tracker that is securely on your wrist and you’ll have a full breakdown of your night’s sleep to see in the morning.
